Loose vs sealed: what to open, what to keep, and how it affects value

With vintage figures, condition rules almost as much as rarity. There are two axes that define your piece's value.

Loose vs sealed

• Sealed — in its original blister or box, unopened. Usually worth more, especially when the packaging is part of the appeal: 1st edition Tomy with its blister, promos, special editions.
• Loose — out of the packaging. This is about ~90% of the market and is still highly collectible if in good condition.

When it's worth keeping sealed

• Scarce or grail pieces: there, the blister is pure value.
• Iconic packaging (Monster Collection blister, promos): the cardboard has value.
• Anything you plan to resell to a serious collector.

When you can open without guilt

• A common piece for display: opening it barely reduces its value and gives you the piece in hand.
• If your goal is to enjoy and display, not invest, feel free to open the commons.

The silent enemy: condition

Whether you open it or not, watch out for:

• Sun → plastic yellowing (lowers the price).
• Dust and rubbing → matte or transferred paint.
• Humidity → damage to sealed cardboard.
